China's First Group Standard for Children's Snacks Was Issued

On May 17, China Food Association issued the group standard "General Requirements for Children's Snacks", which will be implemented on June 15. This is the first standard specifically on snacks in China, and the first standard on snacks for children. With the promulgation of the standard, it is expected to provide a basis for research and development for the planning of nutritious snacks for children, set enterprise internal standards, set industry benchmarks and support the healthy development of the snack industry.

 

At present, China's food regulatory standards for infants and young children (0 to 3 years old) are "GB 10765-2010 National Food Safety Standard Infant Formula", "GB 10767-2010 National Food Safety Standard Older Infants and Young Children Formula", "GB 10769-2010 National Food Safety Standard Cereal-based Complementary Foods for Infants and Young Children" and "GB 10770-2010 National Food Safety Standard Canned Complementary Foods for Infants and Young Children" and so on, mainly for formula, rice powder and puree complementary food for infant, however, infant snacks and some other types food are not involved.

 

The group standard "General Requirements for Children's Snacks" will be implemented on June 15. The standard divides children into two stages according to age: preschool children from 3 to 6 years of age and school-age children from 6 to 12 years of age. The different priority nutrient requirements are determined based on the growth characteristics of children of different ages. With regard to a healthy diet for children, refer to the Guideline to Snacks for Children and Teenagers in China, to propose the regulation on reducing added sugar, salt and oil, and the requirements of limit values for sodium chloride, sucrose, fat. In terms of packaging design safety, the standard requires that the packaging of children's snacks not only meet the relevant national standards, but also fully consider the safety of children in the design of packaging structure. Children should not be harmed in the process of use, such as cutting, accidentally eating and other risks.
